School of Earth and Environment

Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:

Earth Sciences, (ES3)

Programme specification:

The programme will allow students to:

- develop a broad range of knowledge in order to allow professional practice in subsurface structural geology, in either an academic or industrial context
- be trained in relevant field and desk-based techniques for the practice of structural geology and geophysics
- develop knowledge, appreciation and critical analysis of geological context to the application of seismic methods
- gain an in-depth knowledge of seismic and structural methods
- develop numeracy skills essential to the professional practice of geoscience
- develop teamwork and professional skills essential to successful project completion in a professional geoscience setting.

The strengths of the degree programme include:

a) a learning experience within an environment of active nationally and internationall recognised research
b) developed multi-disciplinary links within the School
c) strong links with industry allowing participation by industry in class-based teaching
d) extensive participation by industry in the provision of MSc dissertation projects
e) extensive availability of industry-standard software for both taught-course and project work
f) industrially-funded scholarships for UK and EC students.

Students who have fewer than 90 credits from their taught modules in June will be required to either:
1. Defer the start of their dissertation/project to the next academic session, pending the outcome of their re-sits in August;
or, if they have fewer than 60 credits
2. Re-sit their failed modules in August, for the maximum award of a PG Dip

- For the award of MSc in MSc Structural Geology with Geophysics a minimum of 150 credits must be accrued by successful completion of modules, and modules constituting the remaining 30 or less credits must be awarded marks of 40 of better.
- SOEE5110 and SOEE5111 (Independent Projects) must be awarded marks of 50 or more.
