Programme specification:

The Programme draws on the strengths of staff within the School of Education and in other departments in the University to offer rigorous, interdisciplinary academic study in the fields of childhood; education, sociology; social policy; and educational/social psychology. It aims to meet the increasing demand for well qualified specialists able to work with children and their families, both in the community and in the institutions which meet their needs.

By providing a sound academic base for the analysis and development of practice, the degree will produce professionals who are equipped to deal with the rapid changes that are a feature of the complex area of policy and provision for children.

The content of the programme consists of study in a number of areas namely:

- Childhood:
Specifically, the study of the theories and context of childhood, historical, sociological, cultural, psychological and political. Students will consider what childhood means for us today in a range of contexts and how this compares with childhood in previous generations.

- Education:
This strand of the programme considers the past and present, social and political context of early years and primary education. Students explore the underlying traditions, ideologies and belief systems and changing patterns of provision and policy making in these areas. Key themes include inclusion and the international educational context, and the development of curricula, assessment and pedagogy appropriate to the needs of children in the twenty first century.

- The psychology of childhood:
This strand of the programme explores the social, cultural, emotional and personal development of children. Key themes are the social development of young children including a child's understanding of self, the development of empathy and friendships, family relationships, early communication and the development of language.

- Social Policy and Child Welfare:
This area of study draws upon historical, social and cultural constructions of childhood and uses them to inform an analysis of the theory, practice and policy of child welfare from its beginnings to the present day. Students are introduced to contemporary issues and the most recent policy initiatives in the field, and critically examine their impact upon child welfare organisations.

The programme also seeks to promote the skills and understanding necessary to carry out research in these exciting and currently highly debated fields. It is also designed to develop European and International perspectives on issues covered so that students are equipped to take up opportunities in the globalized workplace.
