Programme specification:

In Year 1, you will undertake core studies in the historic, cultural and technological aspects of art & design. Alongside your academic work, you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of design, with a view to developing skills in drawing, repeat pattern, constructed textiles techniques such as knit and stitch, and the use of colour.

In Year 2, you will develop your academic understanding of the core subjects and an awareness of professional standards.
You will focus your studio practice and specialise in one of the following:

- Digital Textiles
- Structured Textiles
Each of these pathways is further sub-divided into:
-Textiles for Fashion
-Textiles for Interiors

If you choose to the textiles for interiors route within the digital textiles specialism you will study specialist textile modules using digital technology, which focuses upon digital print on paper and fabric, and laser cutting. You will learn how to test a variety of substrates for fashion and interior textile product applications using laser-cutting technology. You will also gain an understanding of digital print technology on paper and fabric.

If you choose the textiles for fashion route within the digital textiles specialism, you will work with either laser cutting, digital fabric printing or materials manipulation (or a combination of these processes) in producing large scale fashion product concepts. This route focuses upon creative and innovative textiles for fashion, rather than pattern cutting and garment construction.
Drawing and repeat pattern drafting, along with in depth market research, form the core activities of the digital textiles specialism, and will be developed in years two and three.

If you select the either the knitted or stitched textiles route within the constructed textiles specialism, you will be given the opportunity to develop innovative and contemporary designs for fashion or interiors based on your own visual and market research. Using a variety of media, you will explore knitted and stitched textile structures and techniques in order to gain the experience necessary to realise exciting and creative designs. The curriculum will include the study of technical aspects of fabric composition, to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to influence the form, colour, 3D structuring, and other properties of textile materials. This area is informed by internationally leading research work in the School.

In semester two, you will have the option to continue your studio practice in textile design or choose a theoretical module in textile technology. This academic option will focus upon textile technology for designers including aspects of fibres, yarns, and knitted, woven, non-woven and print technologies.

In Year 3, you will work towards a final exhibition of design work and produce a written investigation into a textiles subject of your choice. In semester two, you will also have the option to continue your studio practice in textile design or choose theoretical modules in textile technology. This academic option will focus upon textile technology for designers focusing upon new developments in fibres, yarns, and knitted, woven, non-woven and print technologies.
