Programme Aims:

Distinctiveness of the programme:
- Spiral integrated curriculum.
- Patient safety at the heart, recurring theme throughout.
- New IDEALs course (Innovation, Development, Enterprise, Leadership, Safety), is a novel course that underpins the whole MBChB, recognising the challenges and requirements of modern postgraduate practice with a strong emphasis on professionalism and development.
- One of only a few schools to offer ‘wet anatomy’ dissection.
- Clinical integration of all aspects of curriculum with academic clinicians involved from year 1 onwards.
Introduction of RESS - Research Evaluation & Special Studies
- New model for existing SSCs - much more closely related to integrate research & evaluation skills with clinical & science teaching.
- Year 1 includes human body measurement projects linking research, project design, clinical & science e.g. looking at blood pressure measurement, populations & diseases.
- Years 2&3 develop this theme with a series of RESS tasks (e.g. literature reviews) and skills development in managing a ’mini project’.
- RESS will build across year 3 as students plan towards an 18 month project in year 4 & 5 focussing on science, clinical medicine, service development, IT or internationalism etc. Key role to draw on core business in NHS care (translational, service implementation)
Introduction of IDEALS.
- New course that replaces Personal Development, focusing much more on development of ‘softer skills’ required for successful transition through the curriculum and beyond.
- Meshes self and structure.
- Key role in determining and developing notions of self regulation, professionalism, engagement with the course.
Introduction of C2C - Strengthening our existing programme and teaching models - links with community and NHS partners
- Year 1 - campus + 1/2 day/week clinical visits - understanding how teams work, developing professionalism, introduction to consultation.
- Year 2 - campus + 1 day/week clinical. Building up a portfolio of consultations integrating basic physical examination & practical skills.
- Year 3 - junior clinical placements, safety and surgical skills.
- Year 4 - speciality placements + advanced performance (e.g. critical and continuing care).
- Year 5 - largely assistantship modelled year - helping prepare for transition; Post Finals pre-employment shadowing block.
