Programme specification:

Programme Aims
On successful completion of this programme students will be equipped to perform a specialist role in the substance misuse field.

They will be able to:
1. demonstrate a detailed understanding of the use of substances, theories of dependence and the consequences of substance misuse
2. evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of a number of treatment modalities for substance use
3. justify research strategies used to investigate treatment and policy outcomes
4. enhance clinical skills relevant to specific interventions in the addiction field
5. reflect in depth on the links between practice and theory
6. select and implement a research strategy applicable to the addiction field.

The programme will give students an opportunity to apply theory and research in competence assessed practice. It includes a blend of distance learning and face to face taught modules affording students who are employed and may have family commitments a greater flexibility in their learning schedules both in and away from the workplace.

This programme is unique as a part time undergraduate programme in the UK recruiting students who are mainly already employed in the field of addiction. It is further unique in being able to assess competence by direct observation of practice, when the practice is workplace based and its assessment occurs in the academic setting.
