Entry requirements:

• 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above to include maths, English and science
PLUS
• 3 A levels grades ABB – must include one science (biology, human biology, physics or chemistry)
OR
• QCF BTEC Extended Diploma grades Distinction/Distinction/Distinction and must contain at least one-third science content
OR
• Access to Higher Education 45 level 3 credits at Distinction and 15 at merit. This must contain at least one third science content. 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above to include maths, English and science.

Consideration will be given to other appropriate qualifications commensurate with A2 level study.

To ensure that education opportunities are accessible to all sectors of society, consideration will be given to applicants with a wide range of educational backgrounds for entry onto the programme.


English requirements for candidates for whom English is not their first language:
• GCSE English Language grade C or above
• IELTS: 7.0 overall with not less than 6.5 in every skill
• TOEFL: 600 (paper based) with not less than 5.0 in “test of written English”
• TOEFL iBT: 100 with minimum scores of 22 in listening, 24 in reading, 24 in speaking and 25 in writing

Additional Requirements:

The candidate must show on application (personal statement) or at interview, the following:

• Two satisfactory references;
• Satisfactory health clearance;
• Satisfactory outcome of an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service;
• Commitment to a career in radiography;
• Evidence of a clinical visit to a Radiology department.
• Evidence of recent academic study (normally within the last five years);
• Currently eligible for a means tested NHS Bursary

Advanced standing

Transfer from the Certificate of Higher Education in Diagnostic Imaging Studies, or a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography 3–year pre-registration undergraduate programme at another educational institution will be considered, subject to approval by the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL). Entry onto the programme via this process is subject to availability of places and funding.

Programme specification:

Students are introduced to the clinical environment very early in their first semester. During weeks 2 to 9 they spend one day a week in their clinical placement. This enables the new radiography student to settle into their clinical placement in preparation for their first 3-week clinical block in weeks 10 – 12 and maximise their clinical experience. These one-day placements also expose students to the clinical environment very early in the programme and help to confirm their choice of profession and degree studies.

The clinical:theory ratio is approximately 40:60, thus providing students with a considerable amount of time on clinical placement to integrate theory and practice, as well developing essential skills and confidence in the clinical environment.

Students are rotated through two key hospital trusts throughout the 3 years of their degree. This exposes our students to a rich learning environment across a large teaching hospital and a smaller district hospital. They have to develop strategies to be flexible and adaptable to a range of imaging departments, healthcare teams, equipment, practice, and to manage the patient experience from a diverse population and presentation of diseases and pathology.

An x-ray room is rented from a large local teaching trust to use as a clinical skills room. This has the advantage of working with real patients in a relaxed and controlled environment. Students benefit from small group teaching with a clinical tutor. A mixed student group from all clinical placements encourages them to compare and contrast practice. Access to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) provides a rich learning resource of x-ray images for tutorials and discussions.

Year 3 students have the opportunity to run the clinical skills room as part of their final electives. This provides an opportunity to consolidate management and organisational skills along with developing student tutorials and teaching packages.

The timetable for year 3 students consists of predominantly teaching in semester 1 and clinical placement in semester 2 prior to completion of the programme. This aids the transition from student to practitioner as students potentially commence their graduate post very soon after their final clinical placement.

Pattern recognition/ Preliminary image evaluation: This was introduced to align the programme in response to the College of Radiographers (CoR) recommendation that image interpretation and clinical reporting knowledge and skills contributed to the core content of all pre-registration undergraduate programmes. This enabled the programme to reflect the CoR’s aspiration that by 2010, clinical reporting by radiographers would become a core competence (The College of Radiographers 2005). These skills are introduced in year 1 and further developed and consolidated throughout the rest of the programme. Anecdotal feedback indicates that Leeds Radiography graduates demonstrate a high level of competency in image commenting when it has been included in the interview process for band 5 radiographer posts.

Year 3 optional modules: students can choose two 10-credit optional modules to explore areas of personal interest in more depth and detail. This has the potential for students to graduate with additional skills. For example, they may wish to focus on ultrasound and choose the Focussed Professional Practice module to arrange a 3-week placement in an ultrasound department, and study Advanced Medical Imaging Science to focus on the associated science and technology. This encourages personal and professional development as students are responsible for their own learning and areas of personal interest. Previous students have secured band 6 posts in breast imaging or CT due to demonstrating these additional skills.
