Programme specification:
This programme offers an opportunity for international students whose first language is not English or who do not have experience of the UK undergraduate learning environment to take a selection of music modules offering depth of study as well as individual choice and specialisation. In certain circumstances the programme may also be appropriate for graduates whose degrees are in a subject other than music but who can demonstrate specialist expertise in music, and who wish to prepare for a postgraduate degree in music.
At the end of the programme, students will have achieved the following:
- consolidation of prior learning in music
- robust skills training in the study of music in English, in particular, reading about music, writing about music, listening to music and talking about music
- a body of knowledge and understanding in at least one specialist area
- practical, intellectual and study skills, on the basis of which students may proceed confidently either into the music profession, or to taught Master's level and beyond that to research.
Leeds is an ideal place to undertake such a programme. It is a major city in the North of England with a richly diverse cosmopolitan community. Among its important cultural institutions are an opera house and orchestra, as well as the world-famous Leeds International Piano Competition. There are easy connections from Leeds to London and to major cities in Europe.
The University of Leeds is one of the largest and most important academic institutions in the UK and has a thriving School of Music housed in purpose-built premises with a superb concert hall. There are around 500 undergraduate and 75 postgraduate students who enjoy excellent practice, studio, computer and library facilities.
The School includes leading experts in music research and teaching across all the major sub-disciplines of music: composition; ethnomusicology; multimedia; music technology and computer music; musicology; performance; popular, world and traditional musics; psychology of music. With a Leeds music award, graduates should significantly enhance their prospects in a wide range of careers.
