Programme specification:

- The programme is structured in a such a way as to meet the professional development needs of teachers and associated professionals working both in mainstream and more specialised contexts. It has as its central concern the promotion of effective educational practice for pupils with special educational needs, through: increasing participants' knowledge of current legislation, reports and relevant research; and promoting their understanding of the nature of SEC and of strategies which may best support the learning and achievement of pupils, including collaborative partnerships with others - pupils, parents, colleagues, learning support assistants, external support agencies, etc.

- The programme aims to:
> address critically current issues in the field of special educational needs and to relate these to participants' professional practice;
> analyse and evaluate evidence concerning effective strategies for promoting high quality teaching and learning for pupils with special educational needs; and
> promote participants' professional reflectiveness and analytical skills.

- The programme is informed by current legislation, governmental and inspection reports, and by national and international research evidence. Programme tutors are themselves active researchers in the field of special educational needs. The approach encouraged throughout is a reflective and questioning one.

- Two routs are provided through the programme, one of which is designed for UK-based and one for international participants. Each has a core module which provides a framework of up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, research and practice across the full continuum of special educational provision, set against either UK or international policy contexts.

- UK and international students come together in the optional modules, which each address principles and practical strategies for promoting effective practice in key aspects of special educational needs. Included are both taught and directed study modules. These are designed to allow participants some flexibility to tailor their route through the programme according to the requirements of their schools or services and their own professional development needs. The Critical Study provides further flexibility, offering the opportunity for individualised school-focused study.
