Programme specification:
The programme will:
- Build on a long and successful history of PGT provision by staff in the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies, in the School of Law, in the fields of criminology and criminal justice;
- Provide students with advanced knowledge about national and international criminal justice policy and practice and contemporary criminological theory;
- Facilitate the development of research methods skills;
- Encourage students to develop other transferrable skills including strong writing skills critical and analytical thinking skills, and oral presentation skills;
- Require students to complete a 15,000-word dissertation. During the course of their dissertation they will receive supervision and guidance from their academic supervisor. They will have the opportunity to conduct empirical research in conjunction with a criminal justice agency for their dissertation, if they wish to do so and meet the necessary academic requirements. They may also have the opportunity to conduct research for their dissertation at an overseas institution, as outlined above;
As members of the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies (CCJS), students will be part of a lively academic environment and will be encouraged to take advantage of the many extra curricula opportunities available. These include:
- The CCJS Public Seminar Series, during which academics from the UK and beyond give papers to a mixed audience of criminal justice practitioners, academics, students and others;
- The CCJS Annual Lecture, which in 2015/16 was given by Professor David Lyon and entitled ‘Big Data Surveillance: Snowden, Everyday Practices and the Digital Future’.
- Various events organised by the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre.
