Programme specification:
The programme will provide postgraduate students with an opportunity to study at an advanced level the engagement between religions, public life, and civil society in Britain and beyond. It will focus on the public roles of religious communities and individuals, particularly in liberal pluralist societies. It will address theoretical issues such as the meaning of secular and post-secular society; the role of religion in public policy and public spaces; tolerance and religious freedom; multiculturalism and religious literacy.
The programme is interdisciplinary - sociological, theological, historical, anthropological, and philosophical - and will expose students to a range of methods appropriate to researching the place of religion in public life. These will include the use of historical, legal and political documents, ephemera and material culture; fieldwork methods, such as ethnography, interviewing, oral history, and the use of questionnaires; and mapping. Students will learn about the nature of the research process; the issues of subjectivity, objectivity, reflexivity; the use and development of theory, research ethics, and the use of research in reflecting on practice, employment and public roles. Once exposed to these methods and issues, students will then have the opportunity - in the dissertation and, if they so choose, the research project - to put them into practice in relation to a topic of their choice in the general area of religion and public life. These modules offer an opportunity to work independently with the support and advice of a supervisor. It is possible, where appropriate, for students to use this opportunity to reflect on and analyse issues of relevance to their own role, work or practice in relation to religion and public life.
In addition to these core aspects of the programme, it will be possible to study other relevant subjects, such as religion and gender, Islam/Christianity and politics, and religion and development issues, and/or to take a module on an unrelated subject in theology and religious studies or in another discipline.
