Dentistry

Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:

The Dentistry Benchmarking statement has been consulted. The then programme manager was a member of the Benchmarking panel in Dentistry (2001). The new programme and its subsequent amendments have been developed with reference to this and crucially, to the General Dental Council's (GDC) requirements on the undergraduate dental curriculum, 'The First Five Years' (2008) and the most recent statement on 'Preparing for Practice 2012'

Programme specification:

The programme will:

- encourage the development of dental surgeons who are able to accept professional responsibility for the effective and safe care of patients, who appreciate their ethical responsibilities including the need for continuing professional development in a changing environment. Reflective learning forms a central theme in the programme and, through engagement with the progress file and Leeds for Life, students are offered the opportunity to prepare for sustained learning and continuing professional development.

- be at the forefront of the national/international vision for dental education, enhancing the reputation of the Dental Institute and University, particularly due to the distinctive enhancement afforded by curriculum changes that permit the award of Master and Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Science.

- provide a 'blueprint' for curriculum development in dentistry elsewhere. The process will be disseminated through conference presentations and publications in the literature.

- continue to provide undergraduate dental education designed to meet the General Dental Council's (GDC) requirements of initial qualification and a foundation for general professional training, safe clinical practice, continuing education and postgraduate study.

- continue to be distinct from other University programmes as the fundamental spine of the programme is about clinical dentistry. Long clinical terms are required for longitudinal patient care and of central importance is the requirement that upon graduation, dental surgeons must demonstrate that they are able, independently and in an unsupervised way, to provide primary oral health care for patients. It is incumbent on programme provision, therefore, to include expectation of demonstration of clinical competence at that level.

- introduce relevant clinical experience from the very outset of the programme.

- promote inter-disciplinary approaches to dental education and the practice of Dentistry, enhancing team-working among members of the dental workforce and the development of leadership skills in the dental graduate.

- further enhance opportunities for the integration of science in clinical practice.

-facilitate increased efficiency and effectiveness through the use of outreach teaching, multi- purpose 'phantom head' facilities, state of the art clinical facilities, IT and multi-media.

- continue to make provision for intercalated schemes of study (Honours Bachelor Degrees) in other Schools and Departments and interim exit awards (at Certificate, Diploma and Degree levels) for those who step off.

- continue to broaden the entry gate, increasing the potential for participation from under-represented groups.

- meet the changing requirements of the public it serves (for example, to reflect the changing pattern of presentation of oral disease and a shift in emphasis towards prevention of disease, the promotion of oral health and the need for enhanced communication at all levels) and the profession.

-Allow the appreciation of the practice of dentistry in international environments, clinically, as well as socially and politically and as a result faciliatate communication skills and reflection on practice.
