School of Physics and Astronomy

Examination board through which the programme will be considered:

School of Physics and Astronomy

Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:

Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics

Programme specification:

The programme will provide a sound education in physics with particular application to astrophysics. The programme focuses on gaining an understanding of the physical principles that control the natural world as a whole with special reference to the origin and evolution of planets, stars and the universe. There is also an emphasis on hands-on experience that is gained in laboratory and computing modules as well as project work.

Every student has the opportunity to use the telescopes conveniently located in the School's Observatory on the roof of the building. An endowment fund specifically for the observatory allows students to use state-of-the-art detectors and spectrographs. Students will also have the chance to go on a field trip to use 30 m radio telescopes at Goonhilly in Cornwall where they will learn first hand about radio astronomy and participate in research programmes.
