Programme specification:

The proposed MSc will be distinctive in the following ways:

a) Including a higher proportion of research methods modules than is currently possible under our existing masters (where PhD students represent only a small minority), while retaining a strong disciplinary focus (allowing students to pick up to 60 credits of options from subject specific masters programmes). It will also provide a training route for research students in areas of LUBS, which, under the current system, have no ESRC recognised training route (namely, marketing, IB and organisational behaviour);
b) Providing a critical overview of the theory and practice of state of the art in research methods (both qualitative and quantitative) delivered by leading researchers in the field of management and business;
c) Providing a strong inter-disciplinary focus in which students will be encouraged to focus on the interconnections between different research methods and designs across the social sciences (including economics). The practical implications of inter-disciplinary research will also be addressed by leading researchers involved in cross-divisional and cross faculty research projects;
d) Providing a strong grounding in the philosophical (ontological and epistemological) debates and assumptions that underpin social science research;
e) Offering students a high level of flexibility to customise assessment and the choice of subject specific modules to their own particular research interests.

At the end of the programme students should:
- have the capacity to pursue excellence in research and teaching in the broad fields of business and management for the benefit of society in general, and the academic, business and professional communities in particular;
- develop a critical knowledge of the state of the art in qualitative and quantitative methods in business and management and the social sciences more generally;
- acquire an understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of social science research;
- develop skills in the application of quantitative and qualitative methods to a research project leading to a dissertation;
- acquire skills for independent learning and project management;
- develop a critical understanding of relevant theoretical and empirical literature in their chosen subject area and the ability to apply this to specific research questions;
- acquire some of the personal skills required for a successful career in carrying out research in academia, business and consultancy;
- develop more in depth knowledge of particular subject areas in management and business through access to the School's masters programmes in Management, Human Resource Management, Organizational Psychology, Marketing and International Business;
- develop a critical understanding of the challenges posed by inter-disciplinary research in the social sciences;
- develop oral and written skills associated with presenting and publishing research findings;
- develop knowledge of ethical conduct, professional issues and practical constraints in applied research methods.
