Mechanical Engineering

Examination board through which the programme will be considered:

Mechanical Engineering

Programme specification:

The programme will offer a broad range of subjects relevant to corrosion management and control in the oil and gas sector. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding of electrochemical principles of corrosion, aspects of materials technology and the application of packages for corrosion management.

The programme is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of corrosion principles and practice yet is tailored by the student to suit their particular needs and interests, by providing some options in the module catalogue. It is aimed at graduate engineers or physical scientists who want to develop a career as a corrosion engineer in the oil and gas sector. The programme also aims to provide in depth knowledge in specific subject areas to those graduates who are considering a research career in either industry or academia.

On completion of the programme a graduate should be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge and understanding in corrosion but in particular in the area of their research project;
- apply this knowledge in analysing and solving complex corrosion problems requiring a combination of theoretical, experimental and computational techniques;
- demonstrate skills of communication, time and resource management and project planning in order to successfully complete his/her chosen project.

At the end of the programme students should be able to:
- demonstrate skills of communication, time and resource management and project planning in order to successfully complete their chosen project;
- demonstrate in-depth specialist knowledge of corrosion principles and corrosion control/management relevant to the oil and gas sector;
- exhibit competence in the exercise of generic corrosion measurements using electrochemical apparatus;
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of techniques applicable to advanced corrosion research and appreciate the challenges currently being addressed in corrosion research;
- take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
- proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and to evaluate these;
- be competent in use of commercially available tools for oil and gas corrosion measurement;
- appreciate the importance of corrosion in the overall flow assurance strategies in oil and gas.
