Programme specification:

The BA/Integrated Masters in Liberal Arts combines depth and breadth of study, and places particular emphasis on the development of linguistic and cultural understanding and the use of inter-disciplinary methods of enquiry.
The course has two strands.
[1] Students choose a concentration of modules in one of French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. This strand of the course comprises 40+60+60 credits out of a yearly total of 120 credits in Years 1, 2 and 4 respectively.Students spend Year 3 abroad, so they can deepen their understanding of the relevant foreign language. Liberal Arts students are therefore guaranteed a thorough formation in the methods and practices of one discipline. This strand constitutes the student's major.
[2] Students choose a combination of modules drawn from 7 broadly defined Liberal Arts Topic areas. They take 60+40+20 credits in these Topic areas in Years 1, 2 and 4 respectively. In addition, in each year they take a Liberal Arts core module of 20+20+40 credits in Years 1, 2 and 4 respectively. Students spend Year 3 abroad, so they can deepen their understanding of the relevant foreign language.
The Topic structure gives students the freedom to follow their interests across diverse subject areas, and equips them with skills of cross-disciplinary enquiry. The Level 1 Topic modules prepare students for upper level modules in the corresponding Topic, so ensuring that disciplinary variety is combined with thematic coherence.
The Liberal Arts core modules also support the cross-disciplinary character of the programme. For example, the Level 1 core module introduces students to the idea and practice of cross-disciplinary study via an extended case study, which involves the examination of a focal theme from the vantage point of a variety of Humanities and Social Science disciplines. The programme also equips students with the skills they need to address diverse audiences, and there are extended opportunities for external engagement for those who wish to take this track. The Liberal Arts core modules at Levels 1 and 2 provide a training in skills of communication, and the Level 2 and Level 3 core modules give students the opportunity to engage with partners external to the University as they investigate a focal question and disseminate the findings of their research.
The Level 1 Topic modules also involve the study of contemporary social and ethical questions. So graduates of the BA Liberal Arts will have an appreciation of the relevance of their studies for our understanding of life in contemporary Britain. In these ways, the programme aims to provide an intellectual formation that runs broad and deep, that ranges across disciplines in a thematically coherent way, and that enables students to acquire the wide-ranging skills they will need to engage with the world beyond the University.
