Programme specification:

Aims

- To provide an integrated multidisciplinary education in mechatronics, robotics and related engineering topics.
- To provide an in-depth education in the key underpinning topics of electrical and mechanical engineering such as electronic circuit theory, electromagnetism, solid mechanics, vibration and control.
- To provide a research-led curriculum and learning approaches in all topics, in particular in control systems, embedded systems, machine intelligence, intelligent systems, and electric drives and actuators.
- To demonstrate the application of mechatronics and robotics in industry.
- To develop students' generic and transferable skills in written/verbal communication, management, leadership and business for careers in engineering or other professions.
- To provide extensive practical experience of electrical and mechanical engineering through laboratory work and the completion of an extensive independent project in every year of study.
- To meet the full educational requirements (in the case of the MEng programme), in compliance with UK-SPEC, to permit progression to Chartered Membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and registration with ECUK as a Chartered Engineer.
- To meet the educational requirements expected of a 3 year Engineering programme (in the case of the BEng programme), in compliance with UK-SPEC, to contribute to progression to Chartered Membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and registration with ECUK as a Chartered Engineer.

Objectives

On completion of the 3 year BEng programme, graduates will be able to:

- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the underlying science and mathematics of electrical and mechanical engineering.
- Apply mathematical and computer models to electrical and mechanical engineering problems.
- Apply a knowledge and understanding of electronics, power systems, electric drives, control systems and mechanical design to engineering projects.
- Apply a systems approach to electrical and mechanical engineering problems;
- Show competence in the use of modern software and hardware tools, materials, components and equipment for the design, construction and test of electronic circuits, control systems drives and mechatronic or robotic systems.
- Demonstrate a range of design skills including the ability to identify design constraints and to appreciate user needs.
- Demonstrate creativity in the design of mechatronic and robotic systems.
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the commercial, economic and societal aspects of electronic and electrical engineering and understand the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering.
- Show an awareness of the legal frameworks governing mechatronics and robotics, including governmental legislation, intellectual property and contractual issues.
- Show awareness of the environmental and sustainability, health and safety and risk assessment issues associated with mechatronics and robotics.
- Understand appropriate codes of practice and industry standards - including quality standards - and be able to deal with technical uncertainty.
- Use a wide range of technical literature and other information sources.
- Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication.
