Programme specification:
The MA in Arts Management and Heritage Studies which has been developed in close collaboration with the School of Performance and Cultural Industries as a prospective sister programme to their planned MA in Arts Management and Cultural Leadership (for entry 2016), builds on the success of the MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies, and the research interests of staff in both schools. It aims to contextualise and investigate the key theoretical concepts behind the emerging academic fields of Arts Management and Heritage Studies, and engage students in the application of academic ideas in the professional workplace. By combining theory and practice, the programme will both produce highly employable graduates (an approach evidenced by the success of the MAAGMS alumni) and future researchers and academics in the fields. As some museums move to the role of 'manager' rather than 'curator,' the programme will ensure that the University's provision meets and critically analyses such changes in the profession. It also will allow the research that has resulted from the FAHACS led Transforming Cultural Heritage strand of the CSI hub to be translated into our teaching practice, under the guidance of the strand leader, professor Catherine Karkov and the School's University Research Fellow in Intangible Heritage, Dr Helen Graham. The students will become members of the Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage and enjoy the opportunities that membership offers, from networking events and links to alumni, to conferences, seminars and reading groups.
The programme will benefit from its location at the heart of a city and region that host a very wide range of cultural organisations and events. The two collaborating schools already have excellent partnerships with a wide range of cultural organisations, such as Leeds Museums and Galleries, Opera North, The West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds Grand and the City Varieties, and Harewood. Our students work with museums, galleries, heritage organisations, charitable trusts and theatres across Yorkshire, nationally and internationally and our research and research led teaching is frequently founded in mutually beneficial cultural collaborations. Students will be able to gain hands-on access to a wide variety of organisations through placements, project work. In the dissertation, students will be encouraged to synthesise their theoretical and professional experience.
