Programme specification:
The MA in American Literature and Culture offered by the School of English at this University is, along with other similar programmes offered by the School, marked by a combination of wide range and specific focus, by the currency of its scholarly approaches and by its acknowledgement of the importance of both tradition and innovation in specific choices of texts, modules and possible student combinations.
As currently organised this scheme constitutes a number of 'issue based' modules which not only provide necessary coverage of major topics and problems in American cultural and literary production but which also enable students to read and (re)consider works by major American writers.
This combination of tradition and innovation, along with a focus on issues of cultural formation and difficulty, is evident in the approaches to teaching and research taken by this scheme. This is a scheme in American Literature and Culture; our work aims to perpetuate and interrogate different literary traditions in the USA and to attend to the cultural importance of non-literary, especially visual, media.
Chosen research projects / dissertation topics must lay within the field of American Literature and Culture.
This distinctive programme allows students to develop an existing enthusiasm for American Literature and to explore further those areas of the subject which may not have figured significantly in their undergraduate programme. It affords an excellent platform for work at doctoral level.
