Programme specification:
The Modern and Contemporary pathway of the MA in English Literature engages students with a detailed emphasis on texts and writers as well as enabling them to engage with the broader cultural, critical, conceptual and political issues that have defined ways of thinking, being and writing in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Its range encompasses major canonical writers and reflects the internationally recognised research interests of members of teaching staff. In its current organisation, the pathway offers both issue-based and period-based approaches to the Modern-Contemporary period and also routinely offers the opportunity to study major writers in depth (for example Joyce, Lawrence, Greene). It embraces canonical as well as popular literature and film adaptation, and engages with some of the defining and urgent cultural issues and legacies of the modern and contemporary periods, including psychoanalysis, post-war writing, postcolonial literatures, mass and popular culture and eco-criticism and the environment.
The pathway retains the flexibility available in other MAs offered by the School: that is to say, students will be able, if they wish, to take two of the prescribed number of modules from the full list of those offered in the MA in English Literature. This would enable them, if they wished, to draw on the School's significant expertise in other relevant areas, such as Postcolonial or American Literature of the twentieth century. Chosen research projects / dissertation topics must lay within the field of British and/or Irish Modern and Contemporary Literature.
This distinctive pathway allows students to develop an existing enthusiasm for Modern and Contemporary Literature and to explore further those areas of the subject which may not have figured significantly in their undergraduate programme. It affords an excellent platform for work at doctoral level.
