Programme specification:
In a world in which borders between public and private as well as between places are increasingly transgressed, identities are becoming more prominent, prolific, variegated, travelled, mixed – and less transparent. As identities complicate in these ways, so do modes for writing identities proliferate, innovate, and reward our investigation. The MA in Writing Identities focuses on the multiform and fascinating subject of identities, with a view to developing students’ critical skills in understanding identities, and students’ creative skills in giving identities life. Critical writing, from psychoanalysis to postcolonialism, and creative writing, from autobiographical confession and family memoir to poetry of place, have in common a concern with writing identities, as do newer forms of creative writing such as ‘faction’, ‘creative nonfiction’ and blogging. Centring on this extensive concern, the MA programme forms a bridge between registers typically kept apart, drawing out the critical aspects of creative writing and the creative dimensions of critical writing.
Students write a research project / dissertation on a subject of their choice with the assistance of specialist supervision and the research resources of the University's Brotherton Library.
This distinctive programme allows students to explore further areas which may not have figured significantly in their undergraduate programme. It affords an excellent platform for work at doctoral level.
