Programme specification:

The programme teaches the value of theoretical ‘approach’ and allows students to experience the relevance of Critical, Cultural and Literary Theory as it has emerged and been developed across a number of diverse fields. Building on research specialisms in critical theory, there will be a marked emphasis on the psychoanalysis of culture and on continental philosophy from Kant and Hegel through to Adorno and Derrida, a tradition of thought not usually emphasised in Anglo-American philosophy departments (including our own) but which is heavily drawn upon by literary critics. The programme is underpinned by three interrelated themes: the ethics of representation; orientations of body and nation; the politics and aesthetics of the unconscious. As well as being shared intellectual commitments of the core teaching staff, these themes are absolutely contemporary and yet also enable access to the history of theory and its crucial interaction with literature, culture and politics. While the primary emphasis is on theory’s interaction with literature, students are also exposed to theoretical developments in film, photography, music and theatre and performance art.

Chosen research projects / dissertation topics must lay within the field of Critical and Cultural Theory.

This distinctive programme allows students to develop an existing enthusiasm for Critical and Cultural Theory and to explore further those areas of the subject which may not have figured significantly in their undergraduate programme. It affords an excellent platform for work at doctoral level.
