Programme specification:

At the end of the programme students should:
- appreciate the contribution to academic and intellectual culture made by the discipline of Linguistics;
- understand the main principles behind linguistic theorising;
- be able to evaluate specific claims put forward by linguists in terms of how those claims are developed and formulated, and how they relate to the discipline as a whole;
- understand the relevance of Linguistics to the practice and methodology of language teaching, with a particular focus on teaching English.

The programme will:
- consolidate students' grounding in general linguistics, the structural analysis of language and the physical analysis of speech sounds;
- enable students to make connections between theory and practice, as they come to understand differences within the range of theories of language and language development and as they derive specific implications from different theories to the language classroom;
- enable students to explore additional subjects through optional modules;
- provide training in research methods and in the associated skills which will enable students to plan, execute and write up a personal research project in a chosen subdiscipline of Linguistics.
