Programme specification:

At the end of the programme students should appreciate the contribution to academic and intellectual culture made by the discipline of Linguistics, understand the main principles behind linguistic theorising and be able to evaluate specific claims put forward by linguists in terms of how those claims are developed and formulated, and how they relate to the discipline as a whole. In addition, understand the relevance of Linguistics to the practice and methodology of English language teaching.

The programme will:
- consolidate the students' grounding in grammar, phonetics and general linguistics;
- expose students to theories and methods in the disciplinary and professional areas of English Language Teaching methodology in a way which will enable them to appreciate work in these areas which is at the frontiers of the subject, and which will advance their professional standing;
- provide a training in research methods and in the associated skills which will enable them to plan, execute and write up a personal research project in Linguistics and Phonetics;
- make available through the range of optional modules the opportunity to develop their experience of another area or areas of the subject.
