Programme specification:

The MA Critical and Applied Musicology programme is designed to provide: a logical progression from the undergraduate music programmes offered by the School of Music at Leeds University and an attractive course for Music graduates from other universities; and the training and preparation necessary for students with ambitions to study musicology to MPhil/PhD level.

The modules Professional Studies and Issues in Critical Musicology are core for the programme. In addition, students acquire advanced competency in a range of key musicological skills (editorial, archival, critical, theoretical) by taking at least one of three compulsory modules (Editing and Archival Studies, Aesthetic Theory or Short Dissertation). These skills are then applied in an extended 60-credit project (Dissertation or Editorial Project) defined in negotiation with the supervisor. Up to 30 credits of optional modules may be studied from those offered in other M-Level disciplines in the School of Music, or, in appropriate cases, elsewhere in the University. Postgraduate musicology study at Leeds therefore comprises a coherent progressive programme, which facilitates movement from general, methodological concerns towards greater specialisation, whilst preserving some flexibility and student choice. Particularly distinctive is the balance struck between topics and approaches traditionally regarded as 'historical musicology' (Editing and Archival Studies), and those associated with the 'critical' or 'new musicology' movement which has come to significance since the 1990s (Issues in Critical Musicology).

The School of Music at Leeds University is one of the largest HEI music departments in Britain and postgraduate studies at Leeds are greatly enriched by the exceptional range and diversity of staff specialisms, and the variety of activities, both practical and academic, taking place within the School. The Brotherton Library provides scope for fruitful study, with its extensive special collection of musical material; students are encouraged to explore these holdings in the course of their studies, as well as relevant archives and repositories further afield, such as York Minster Library, West Yorkshire Archives, and the Henry Watson Music Library, Manchester. The School of Music building also provides a Multimedia Laboratory, Psychology of Music lab, and a dedicated Postgraduate Research Studio, equipped with a number of workstations, desks, and a digital microfilm/fiche reader and printer to facilitate private study. These elements, along with the high calibre and international reputation of the School's musicology staff, give postgraduate musicology at Leeds its unique flavour.
