Programme specification:
The course offers a unique approach to the study of politics by drawing on and integrating the breadth of research expertise of the School. This enables us to offer an unusually broad range of modules alongside the opportunity for students to construct a personalised programme of study that allows in-depth concentration and specialisation in specific areas of interest.
The course provides a firm grounding in political analysis and a critical insight into the real politics behind the headlines. Students will gain first-hand experience of participation in a community of research-active scholars, so enabling them to develop outstanding skills in research, team-working and presentation.
The programme also emphasises the importance and mutual benefit of fully involving MA candidates in the larger research community of the School. Our innovative, research-based pathways and modules provide students with the opportunity to work in collaboration with research-active academics and to contribute meaningfully to our lively research culture.
Central to the programme is the core module in Advanced Political Analysis, which concentrates on the development of analytical and research skills in the study of politics and which examines key concepts such as 'power' and 'the political'. From students can specialise by selecting from a broad range of optional modules.
The course is ideally suited to students wishing to develop the skills necessary to pursue a PhD in Politics. It also provides an excellent grounding for those seeking to launch careers in a range of related areas such as media, civil service, NGOs, Trades Unions and academia.
Progression rules for all POLIS MA programmes
1) Proceed to dissertation:
Students can proceed straight to dissertation if a pass at 50% or above is achieved in a minimum of 90 credits (including all compulsory modules for that programme) AND if they have an overall credit weighted average of at least 50%. If there are any failed modules then one re-sit opportunity per failed module will be offered.
2) Proceed to dissertation suspended until 1) achieved:
Students who achieve 50% or above in a minimum of 60 but fewer than 90 credits will be suspended from progressing to dissertation until after their re-sits have been taken and the criteria in 1) have been achieved. Once the student has achieved the criteria in 1) they will be allowed to progress to project at the next available opportunity which is usually in the next academic year.
3) Cannot proceed to dissertation or MA, re-registered on PG Diploma:
Students will not be allowed to proceed to dissertation or the MA, and will subsequently be re-registered on the PGDip if a pass at 50% or above is achieved in fewer than 60 credits. There will be one re-sit opportunity offered for each failed module for a maximum award of a PGDiploma to be obtained.
