School of Chemical and Process Engineering

Examination board through which the programme will be considered:

School of Chemical and Process Engineering

Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:

Engineering

Programme specification:

At the end of the programme students should be able to:
- understand basic and detailed engineering and geological concepts relevant to petroleum exploration and production technology;
- understand the wide range of exploration, drilling and extraction techniques used in the petroleum industry;
- use accurate standards of analysis and enquiry relevant to the petroleum industry;
- develop and evaluate engineering solutions to a range of basic and complex problems encountered within the industry;
- use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information relevant to the industry;
- design wells and model the performance of reservoirs throughout their economic life;
- demonstrate appropriate technical and professional competencies relevant to the petroleum industry;
- use a range of acquired knowledge, abilities and personal skills to pursue a successful career in the petroleum and related industries.

The modular structure adopted in level 1 (including bridging modules in mathematics, physics and chemistry) allows students with a varied A-level background to become familiar with relevant underpinning geological, engineering and mathematical concepts. Students will also be introduced to a range of transferable technical skills designed to enable them to analyse and communicate technical information and data during the course and in their later professional career, together with an introduction to project team working.

Level 2 is designed to introduce more complex geological, engineering and mathematical topics and also includes group project work and practical laboratory classes.

Level 3 provides detailed subject-specific material in areas such as reservoir modelling, drilling and production, refining and marketing to enable BEng Honours graduates to pursue a successful career in the petroleum industry. Students also undertake a major group project in level 3.

Level 4 provides advanced subject specific materials in topics such as oilfield corrosion, reaction engineering and oilfield case studies. Students are also required to undertake a major individual research project which will be tailored towards their preference of subject area, e.g. reservoir modelling, refining practice, etc.
