Programme specification:

The rise of management consultancy is one of the key success stories of the contemporary business world. Measured according to any range of criteria the growth of this occupation has been very remarkable. During the last two decades of the 20th century, the worldwide market for consulting services increased between 10 and 15 per cent per year, considerably more than the global economy (Armbrüster & Kipping, 2003). Economic success has been accompanied by a steady process of occupational expansion. Indeed, over the last 40 years, the ratio of management consultants to managers has experienced an almost tenfold increase from 1:100 to 1:13 (McKenna, 2006; Kirkpatrick and Kipping 2012). More specifically to the British context, the numbers employed in consultancy services (including market research) has doubled over the last decade. It is not surprising that consultancy regularly features as one of the preferred occupational destinations for graduates. Indeed 5 of the Top 10 Graduate employers (The Times Top 100) have very significant consultancy practices.
However, despite the rise of management consultancy as a distinct occupation and destination for our graduates, there are few dedicated programmes in this area, especially in the more established universities. The Leeds MSc. in Management Consulting will tap into the demand of the growing number of students who seek an understanding of and employment in this sector. Through this course, our students would gain extensive knowledge of the consultancy industry and its key issues, master some key consultancy techniques and methodologies, develop a range of transferable skills and through the CMI link acquire some useful industry contacts. The CMI accreditation is critical, and would give our degree a real USP. This should translate into a very significant advantage in the labour market. This course will be potentially of interest to any management or business graduate, which of course is the biggest subject area in the university system. We have designed the programme to ensure that students graduating from the degree are reflective thinkers in Management Consulting, with a strong academic grounding in the subject area, and core skills which will be of direct relevance in a consulting context. There are 135 credits of core modules to ensure this, across 5 modules. Options will allow students to specialise in particular areas of interest, and these options are drawn from modules already on the books and running in LUBS.
