Entry requirements:

Applicants for the MSc Nursing will be selected on an individual basis following interview and should meet the following entry criteria. This entry criteria exceeds the minimum university standards as applicants also have to meet the entry requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council:

- Graduates with a degree normally 2:1 or above in any subject
Graduates who hold a health related degree such as BSc (Hons) Psychology, Health Studies, Sociology; normally 2:1 or above in which physiology, psychology or social sciences form a significant element of the curriculum. These students may be eligible to join the pathway in year 2 subject to Individual Programmes Panel (IPP) approval.

- Students with a health-related degree may seek entry to the pathway via the Individualised Programmes Panel process. Entry to the pathway via this process is subject to availability of places and funding and approval from the NMC. Applications must comply with the University's AP(E)L policy and will not exceed NMC maximum limits for accreditation of prior learning for theory and practice (as laid down in R3.5.1 NMC Standards for pre registration nursing 2010) in relation to transfers from other institutes, fields of nursing or second registration. All elements within the APL application must be mapped against this pathway's learning outcomes and academic and practice content to ensure all essential practice and theory components for registration are met. The School of Healthcare IPP panel must be satisfied that all the requirements have been met for APL.

- GCSE English grade C or above or equivalent
For applicants where English is not their first language, who have not achieved a GCSE in English at grade C or above, the School in line with the NMC will accept IELTS examination results (academic or general) where the score are at least 7.0 in the listening and reading sections and at least 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections, and where the overall average score is at least 7.0.

- GCSE Maths grade C or above or equivalent

- Evidence of recent study at level 3 or above or equivalent normally within the last five years.

- Two satisfactory references; one of which must be an academic reference.

- Satisfactory Disclosure And Barring Service enhanced clearance and occupational health clearance.

- Non-EU students must meet UK government requirements for healthcare workers from overseas.

Candidates must also demonstrate either in their application form or during selection process:
- Evidence of basic numeracy skills will be formally assessed as part of the recruitment event
- Motivation and insight into the role of the nurse in relation to the chosen field of nursing.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing, including using a computer.
- Self motivation, organisation and ability/commitment to manage a demanding academic and practice placement workload.
- Demonstrate skills transferable to the role of the nurse
- Preferred evidence of relevant practice experience for example working as a healthcare assistant or undertaking voluntary work in a related area of clinical practice.

Students wishing to gain a second registration at Masters level will be able to access the required field pathway with the above entry requirements AND evidence of entry onto Part 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery register in another field.

Programme specification:

The programme requires full time study over the duration of the programme. However it is recorded as part time on the catalogue because of the University's criteria based on total credit and duration of the programme.

The award of MSc Nursing with Registration (Adult), (Child), (Mental Health) is bound without exception to the achievement of Registration on Part 1 of the NMC Professional Register.
