The recommended period for part-time study is 3 years, but it is possible to complete in 2 years provided that students have some flexibility in their attendance pattern.

Entry requirements:
Applications are invited from candidates from a range of backgrounds, including those from social science, environmental, planning and related discipline.
Candidates should have a good first degree (upper second class classification or above) or equivalent qualification.
Other applicants without a first degree or with a lower degree classification may be considered on the basis of their relevant industrial/professional experience and their potential to benefit from the programme. For international students ITS standard English language requirements will apply (IELTS 6.5 overall with not less than 6.0 in any element or equivalents).

Programme specification:
The programme is unique in the UK, offering new insights into not just the practice of designing a 'sustainable transport system' but the way in which the transport system is considered and analysed as part of integrated sustainability policies. It offers students a route in to the practical understanding of the way in which transport is related to sustainable land-use planning, supports social development and informs business practice and wider economic growth. The skills gained through the programme will develop a new range of graduates equipped with the tools and know-how to work across policy sectors to help deliver more sustainable lifestyles.
The core programme offers students an opportunity to develop skills in the development, analysis and presentation of policy measures which will lead to more sustainable outcomes. Students will be taught by experts from academia and practice and will, in addition to being exposed to the state-of-art in sustainability policy, be put in the position of policy experts charged with developing, testing and presenting new and more sustainable policies in the field of transport for government, industry and communities. As well as focussing on designing and evaluating good policy, the core programme addresses the extent to which the governance arrangements can impact on delivery.
The programme offers a great degree of flexibility in the outward facing profiles which the students are able to develop. Students can specialise in transport (by selecting ITS optional modules and a transport focussed dissertation) or might specialise in topics related to governance, development, climate change or environmental economics (by selecting SEE options and a dissertation linking these approaches to the transport sector).
Sustainability goals can be interpreted in many different ways and the challenges faced by developed and developing countries can have different emphases. The programme is designed to offer insights to graduates from all countries and all backgrounds with further specialist options in developing country contexts available for interested students.
