Programme specification:

The programme will provide the opportunity for science/engineering graduates to develop business management skills in the context of the high technology sector, whilst at the same time enhancing their technical knowledge. This is not simply an engineering Masters with a business or management module appended, rather, it provides the opportunity for a balanced study of key topics from both the electronic engineering and business disciplines. In both cases, the available modules have been carefully organised into themes to guide the students to appropriate choices. The core modules have been defined so that all students are provided with an overview of the electronics industry, its key practices, and some success cases studies, as well as studying the fundamental principles of business management, decision making, and entrepreneurship. The joint “Engineering, Technology and Business Management” project is a key distinctive feature of the programme, enabling students to apply the academic principles learned from both the engineering and business disciplines in a detailed study of a high technology commercial challenge. Each project will be jointly supervised by academic members from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (ELEC) and Leeds University Business School (LUBS) to optimise the academic quality of the work from both the engineering and business perspectives.

At the end of the programme students should:
1. Demonstrate technical expertise in the chosen theme of engineering and technology.
2. Apply technical expertise and a knowledge of management and decision-making principles to a broad range of engineering problems in a business context.
3. Demonstrate an effective understanding of the latest developments in the chosen theme and how these can be effectively exploited in relevant industry sectors.
4. Manage the introduction of new technologies into a business and demonstrate an understanding of innovation, operations management and product life-cycle.
5. Identify and evaluate advanced research, concepts, tools, and techniques from management disciplines.
6. Solve problems by working individually and with others to critically analyse, and develop appropriate solutions to, complex commercial problems.
7. Communicate technical management information effectively across key communication media and management settings.
8. Act ethically and responsibly in practice, drawing on effective appreciation and analysis of environmental and sustainability issues, as well as appreciation of globalisation / internationalisation and cultural difference.
9. Critically and constructively reflect on and evaluate their own performance, individually and as part of a team.

Students will be required to study 75 credits from the following optional modules which must include at least one, but not more than two, of the modules offered by LUBS.
Students whose first degree is not in an electronics discipline are recommended to choose ELEC modules from the following set: ELEC5471M, ELEC5681M, ELEC5685M, ELEC5200M, ELEC5650M and ELEC5580M. Students with no prior experience in c-programming will be required to take ELEC5681M. Students with prior experience in c-programming will not be permitted to take ELEC5681M.
