Programme specification:
Adequate water resources are of fundamental importance to the world’s population, and industry and academia throughout the world demand training in their management. MSc Environmental Water Consultancy aims to advance the needed for a career in water management and the career options available to graduates. The important core components of the program are catchment hydrology, contemporary issues and skills in water management, systems thinking and consulting practice, project management and client liaison. Optional modules allow further development of skills in environmental or business management.
Many students on the course have first degrees in subjects such as geography, environmental science, engineering or earth sciences, although the course is also suitable for people who want to change their career direction. For example if you have previously studied a different subject such as maths, chemistry, or biology or have been in industry for a number of years, you would still be welcomed onto the course and can use it as a way opening up new career prospects.
The course advocates ‘learning by doing’, is highly practical and is assessed largely by coursework. Two modules are taught by practicing environmental consultants and we receive guest lectures from business, industry and other academic institutions. We visit several work places, conduct a series of field, laboratory and PC-based practicals and provide the option of a work placement.
The programme will enable students to:
1. Understand the policy context underpinning environmental water management
2. Gain a detailed knowledge of hydrological processes and their investigation
3. Be able to interpret a client’s needs and formulate a contract for the delivery of consultancy work
4. Know how to managing a consultancy project from inception to completion
