Programme specification:

The overall aim of the programme is to provide you with open distance learning whether you are studying as an individual or working in an organisation requiring core training and skills development in GIS. Whilst other institutions offer GIS programmes by distance learning (notably UNIGIS, Kingston and Greenwich Universities) the strength of the WUN programme lies in the distinctive 'specialist' modules and streams offered.

Programmes in other institutions have tended to concentrate on the development of generic skills and knowledge, at the expense of specialist analytical skills required for different aspects of the GIS industry. Thus, after taking the 4 core modules that make up the certificate you can specialise in modules relating to different GIS sectors. This has proved a highly attractive feature of the programme to our students.

More specifically the programme(s) aims are to:
1. provide widening opportunities to pursue a postgraduate programme using distance learning materials and resources.
2. provide learning and teaching experiences that are relevant to every day work and which use practical 'real world examples'
3. develop technical skills and competence in: data and information acquisition, extraction, management and analysis, spatial and statistical modelling, mapping and visualisation
4. develop transferable skills in the use of information technology, virtual working and electronic communication
5. encourage innovative use of information that has a significant geographical component in the areas of business, environment, GIS development, health, planning and remote sensing
6. increase awareness of GIS and modelling tools for improving service delivery, planning, monitoring and management.
