Entry requirements:
Applicants should normally have or expect a first or upper second class honours
degree, or equivalent, in mathematics, statistics, or a science/engineering degree
with substantial quantitative/mathematical content.
School/Unit responsible for the parenting of students and programme:
Institute for Transport Studies
Examination board through which the programme will be considered:
ITS Examination Board
Relevant QAA Subject Benchmark Groups:
A good understanding of the main body of knowledge for the programme of study including some advanced topics.
A very good level of skill in calculation and manipulation of the material within this body of knowledge, and be capable of solving complex problems formulated within it.
Application of a range of concepts and principles in loosely defined contexts, showing good judgment in the selection and application of tools and techniques.
A high level of capability in developing and evaluating logical arguments.
Familiarity with the notion of mathematical modelling, and ability to abstract the essentials of problems, formulating them mathematically, obtaining solutions by appropriate methods and interpreting these solutions.
Confident communication of arguments and effective and accurate conveyance of conclusions.
Effective and appropriate use of computer software/technology.
The ability to work competently and independently, to be aware of own strengths and to understand when help is needed.
Competence in planning and developing an advanced project/investigation/research themed in the mathematical modelling/analysis of transport.
Professional Body Offering Accreditation:
Accreditation will be pursued with The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT)
Programme specification:
This programme is distinctive:
-From other programmes in ITS, due to the clear focus on the mathematics that underpins
transport modelling. Core content spans the entire remit of modelling from mathematical
equations, through models in hand-written code, through to real world applications.
-From existing MSc programmes offered in FoE and FoMaPS that do not overlap with the technical
content nor the application area of this proposed programme.
-From transport MSc programmes in the UK, EU and worldwide due to the focus on mathematical
modelling and computation (rather than engineering).
