Programme specification:

This programme will offer students a unique opportunity to combine the study of art history with a consideration of the role of museums from a historical and contemporary perspective. It enables you to gain valuable work experience through its links with several local country houses, museums and galleries, and to observe collections and artefacts not available to public.

You will become familiar with a number of museums and galleries through organised visits to, for example, Harewood House, Temple Newsam House, Leeds City Museum, Leeds City Art Gallery, the Royal Armouries, the Henry Moore Institute and National Media Museum in Bradford.

At Level One you take core modules. One of these is shared with the art historians, cultural studies students and fine artists, 'A story of Art?' (I & II), the others are focused on 'The English Country House', and an 'Introduction to Museums and Galleries' which introduce students to the study of museums and galleries, firstly to a wide variety of ways of thinking about museums, art galleries and heritage organisations, and in the second semester, through the theme of the English country house. You also select a number of optional and discovery modules from the large array on offer.

At Level Two, you combine your studies in the history of art through options selected according to your interests with core modules on museums and galleries, including a module that involves a number of sessions taught in local museums in conjunction with museum and gallery curators. Students develop an exhibition idea of their own as the final assessment for this module.

At Level Three, you select your options from the art history array, undertake a dedicated, supervised museum/gallery work placement, and complete a dissertation on a subject of your choice.

Throughout the course students acquire a useful network of contacts, practical work experience and a portfolio of work which helps to make graduates of this course highly employable. Previous graduates have obtained jobs at Harewood House, the National Portrait Gallery, Bonhams Auctioneers, The National Trust, and in a wide range of associated careers.
