Programme specification:

- require students to acquire a high degree of intercultural competence with specific reference to the languages, history, societies, cultures and literatures of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries;
- enable students to experience directly the cultures of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries through the compulsory academic year and the obligatory term overseas.

- Students SPPO1060 take assessments on a peninsular Spanish or Spanish-American topic, not a Portuguese/Brazilian topic.
- Students with prior knowledge of Portuguese may, at the discretion of the programme manager, substitute SPPO1083 (40 credits) for SPPO1080 and SPPO1081 (40 credits).

As part of your induction to academic work, and in order to provide you with additional support in key areas of your programme, students are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to undertake the following 5-credit Study Skills module. This module resides above the required 120 credits students take in Level 1 and as such it is not compulsory, but it draws together key guidance that augments provision elsewhere.

In Level 2 students must study 120 credits.

In order to be eligible for an Honours degree, students must meet the normal Rules for Award by passing all modules which are designated to be passed for award or progression and by passing the required number of credits at each level as specified in the Curricular Regulations (at least 200 credits at level 2 or above, of which at least 100 should be at level 3).

- MODL2005 (Linguists into Schools) can be studied either as part of the credit requirements in Spanish or as part of the credit requirements in Portuguese. Correspondingly, students are required to complete assessed work on Spanish or Portuguese topics. The student's decision as regards which of the languages the module will count for needs to be brought to the attention of the module coordinator by the student at the beginning of the module.
- FOAR2000 can only be counted as a Spanish module if the project undertaken relates to Spanish and you have sought prior approval of the Programme Manager.
- Not all modules will be available every year.

In Level 3 students must study 120 credits. Students are required to take a minimum of 60 credits in Spanish and 60 credits in Portuguese, including at least 20-credits as a Final Year Project which can be taken in and count towards either subject.
