Programme specification:

The programme will provide an environment that promotes our intention that students graduating in Spanish at Leeds should have developed the following:
- high-quality linguistic skills in Spanish (in oral and aural proficiency, in context-sensitive communicative skills, and in written language skills);
- familiarity with the diverse language varieties and cultures of the various countries where Spanish is spoken;
- an understanding of the main issues of the past and future developments in these countries;
- a broad knowledge of the discipline of Hispanic Studies;
- specialist knowledge of a wide range of aspects of this discipline;
- and the ability to undertake critical analysis of aspects of these countries, their literatures, languages, history, society and cultures, all informed by the appropriate conceptual frameworks.

The distinctiveness of this programme from other Arts and Humanities programmes at Leeds is twofold. Firstly, a requirement is laid upon students to acquire a high degree of intercultural competence with specific reference to the language, history, societies, cultures and literatures of Spanish-speaking countries. Secondly, the compulsory academic year spent in one of these countries forms a distinctive structural feature of the programme.

Distinctiveness in this field at Leeds compared to other UK degree programmes in Spanish derives from the breadth and diversity of the optional modules offered, which include a number of modules in disciplines not traditional in a "Language and Literature" degree. This in turn reflects the size of the full-time established staff complement, which is amongst the largest in the UK. These options range from traditional literary studies through to history, economics, cultural studies, film studies and area studies.

In addition to this breadth, further reinforcement of knowledge and understanding of the discipline of Hispanic Studies is offered through the language classes at all levels. Almost all optional modules at levels 2 and 3 are informed by current staff research.
