Programme specification:

As a result of the unique collaboration between the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies and the School of Performance and Cultural Industries, the programme will produce highly employable graduates, who both have the practical skills required for a role working in arts management and/or the heritage industry, but also have the analytical ability to ask key questions of their practice. They will be taught how to critically investigate theories of decision making and democracy as well as business and arts management theory and will have explored the challenges of applying these range of philosophies and practices to the everyday practice and strategic development of contemporary arts, cultural and heritage organisations regionally, nationally and internationally. They will also have a keen sense of the complex interconnectedness of business, curatorial, and educational policy and processes in individual sites and organisations. Drawing from the University of Leeds' recognised excellence in critical analysis of history, theory and context and the reputation of the Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage, the programme will produce graduates who are highly capable of intelligently identifying challenges, answering complex questions and communicating effectively with stakeholders in order to continue to ensure the success of the cultural industries in the UK and internationally.

Students will be able to critically investigate and evaluate current practice in arts and heritage through activities such as placements, projects and dissertations. They will benefit from the wide range of partnerships the University has established over the last 20 years of teaching museum studies and arts management. The two collaborating schools already have excellent partnerships with a wide range of cultural organisations, such as Leeds Museums and Galleries, Opera North, The West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds Grand and the City Varieties, and Harewood. Our students work with museums, galleries, heritage organisations, charitable trusts and theatres across Yorkshire, nationally and internationally and our research and research led teaching is frequently founded in mutually beneficial cultural collaborations. Students will be able to gain hands-on access to a wide variety of organisations through placements, project work. In the dissertation, students will be encouraged to synthesise their theoretical and professional experience and they
will be encouraged to understand the potential strengths and weaknesses of current practice in order to develop innovative approaches to their own professional practice.

We are consistently told by our international students that a UK masters helps differentiate them in terms of employability, especially in countries where the cultural industries are undergoing a period of rapid growth, such as in the Middle East, China and Korea. This programme aims to train the next generation of cultural leaders.
