Programme specification:

This programme provides flexible opportunities for professional development in the area of deaf education leading to the teacher of the deaf qualification. This course can be followed at a distance on a part-time basis and the establishment of a parallel Masters in Deaf Education route provides options for continued professional development for teachers not needing the teacher of the deaf qualification.

The programme is delivered through distance learning materials, which are supported by regional tutorials and regular day schools. The department has an established national reputation and draws students to current deaf education courses from all over England and parts of Scotland.

A lot of the learning is work based allowing students to draw from and reflect upon their experiences in deaf education and relate this practical knowledge to their reading and analysis of current theories and research relating to deafness, development and learning.

The programme particularly encourages deaf applicants and draws on the established expertise in the School of Education to provide the appropriate access to and support during the course. This commitment to widening participation further supports University-wide initiatives to encourage deaf students to study at Leeds at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.

The programme leads to the mandatory teacher of the deaf qualification as specified by the TDA.

The distance programme is delivered through a combination of on-line tools and face-to-face teaching. This is supported by regional tutorials as well as synchronous and asynchronous discussion and activities in the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
