Entry requirements:
This programme is open to graduates who have successfully completed an Initial Teacher Education programme and have been awarded Qualified Teacher Status.
At the point of application an assessment will be made for either:
- the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (leading to Advanced Standing of 60 credits) for those candidates who have
previously completed a Masters level Postgraduate Certificate in Education, or:
- the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (leading to Advanced Standing of 60 credits) for those candidates who have
NOT previously completed a Masters level Postgraduate Certificate in Education. The following evidence will be required in
relation to showing that the learning outcomes of the University of Leeds PGCE modules have been met in a professional
context: a portfolio of work including a commentary, an extended piece of writing, achievement against professional standards,
a reference from a senior manager at school of employment and an interview.

The programme will:
- provide a structured and relevant course of professional and academic development for teachers. It is intended that this
programme will emphasise professional enquiry, intellectual reflection and scholarship.
- be taught through a combination of day schools (including lectures, seminars and tutorials) and supported by distance
learning materials with on-line tutor support.
- provide structured school-based learning, allowing students to draw from, and reflect upon their experiences as
teachers and to relate these practical insights to their reading and analysis of current theories and research relating to a
range of issues in teaching and learning.
- address the needs of the schools in relation to the professional development of teachers, the development of a
culture of school-based research and positive outcomes for children.
- introduce a range of practitioner enquiry tools that will be applied in the context of school-based tasks and module
assignments. These skills will also provide an additional framework for professional reflection and evaluation.
- support the development of skilled and effective teachers
- support the development of practitioner researchers of the future
- enhance participants' career opportunities and prospects
- provide a pathway to higher-level research degrees
- be taught by research-active tutors
- be taught on a cohort basis, with each group of students sharing a common starting point with similar backgrounds,
interests, aspirations and concerns. It is anticipated that student interaction and mutual support will be both a feature and
strength of the programme.

Students must study and pass the following compulsory module:

The core module in semester 1 and the recommended module in Year 2 are taught through four Saturday schools at the University. However, for some teachers with specific curriculum interests the recommended module in year 2, Leading Teaching Through Evidence-based Practice, may be replaced with an equivalent 30 credit module selected from a range of options related to Science, Mathematics or Special Educational Needs. Full details of the optional modules are available from the School of Education. Please note that the timetables and dates of these modules are varied including Saturday, weekday, twilight or day sessions. These modules are either delivered within either semester 1 (Sept- Dec) or (Jan- Jun). It is essential that teachers liaise with the programme leader if they wish to consider these options.

Students are required to study and pass a 30 credit School of Education specialist subject module focused on aspects of teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum. Students are normally recommended to study module EDUC 5016M, Leading Teaching and Learning Through Evidence-based practice. However, in negotiation with the programme leader students may choose an optional equivalent module in Science, Mathematics or Special Educational Needs.
