Programme specification:

The Renaissance pathway of the MA in English Literature will enable a close study of a wide range of texts from the period 1550-1640, including poetry, drama, and prose, and a variety of authors including Shakespeare. These works will be analysed in relation to their social, political and intellectual contexts, exploring the connections between the literature and the period in which it was produced.

Depending on the modules chosen, students might focus on various aspects of Renaissance literature and its cultural and social contexts (e.g. the period's religious ideas, political theory and practice, social structures and assumptions), while the compulsory reseach project / dissertation provides opportunities for students to develop their particular interests through the rich resources of the Brotherton Library and its Special Collections of early books and manuscripts, as well as extensive electronic resources. Chosen research projects / dissertation topics must lay within the field of English Renaissance Literature.

This distinctive pathway allows students to develop an existing enthusiasm for English Renaissance Literature and to explore further those areas of the subject which may not have figured significantly in their undergraduate programme. It affords an excellent platform for work at doctoral level.
