Programme specification:
The Romantic pathway of the MA in English Literature focuses on one of the most exciting periods of British literary and political history: the years from the Declaration of American Independence in 1776 through the French Revolution to the passing of the Great Reform Act in 1832. In addition to political change, social forces such as industrialisation and urbanisation led to some remarkable literary responses that were often concerned with the relationship between the self and the natural world. This pathway will explore key texts from the period, and related themes such as imagination, sympathy, gender, national identities, ecology, and revolutionary politics.
The course presents students with the opportunity of pursuing more specialised and advanced work on English Literature of the 1740-1830 period than they will have encountered in their first degree, and should provide an excellent basis for those who wish to go on to pursue research in this area at Ph.D. level.
Each module is individually designed to draw on the specific expertise of the tutor. Chosen research projects / dissertation topics must lay within the field of Romantic Literature and Culture.
