Programme specification:
On completion of the programme, students should have widened their understanding of the cultural, political and historical dimensions which contribute to the making of the Middle East and Islam. Additionally they should have developed relevant skills and knowledge required for work at the highest level in public and private sector organisations, as well as to engage in further study of the region and the discipline. Students should have developed an analytical understanding of cultural, political and religious diversity as lived in today’s world. This should be achieved through the opportunity offered to them to look at the Middle East and Islam from diverse angles including, gender, Media, culture (both Islamic and secular), in addition to the core study of Politics and Islam.
This should result in a comprehensive programme commensurate with the formation of a global understanding of the issues which bear so much relevance to the current interpretation of both Islam and the Middle East.
The programme will equip candidates with pragmatic insights into the intricate conditions of the Middle East and the Islamic world as they affect the global picture. Such knowledge is not only an attractive feature to both UK and international employers, but aims to contribute to the fostering of a better understanding of the events that dominate the current world political arena and of Islam both as a practised faith and a politicised religion.
In addition to the core study of the politics of the Middle East and North Africa on the one hand and the study of contemporary Islam on the other hand, this MA will equip students with in-depth knowledge about related issues such as Arab Cinema and Media, intercultural relations, and Middle Eastern languages such as Arabic and Persian at beginners level. This will help candidates foster perhaps the most important skill of all, namely the ability to understand and communicate with cultures different from our own. These languages will also help candidates access primary sources, which they might find useful for their research projects.
The most distinctive feature of this programme is its multi-disciplinary aspect, combining both Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. This aspect makes it unique in the UK market where similar degrees either focus on the core Political study of the Middle East, or on a Medieval and textual study of Islam and the Qur’an, which bears only a limited relevance to the contemporary Islamic world.
The MA in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies seeks to provide students with a multidisciplinary vision of the study of Islam and the Middle East. Students on this programme are expected to develop their understanding of Islam in the modern world and should understand the dynamics that work towards the shaping of the religion in the current international climate. The programme aims to counteract preconceived and prejudiced visions of both the religion and region.
