Programme specification:
The MA in Electronic and Computer Music offers a flexible and varied approach to the study of this broad and continually-evolving discipline. The programme includes a range of research-led theoretical and practical modules and offers students the possibility to balance the development of practical skills with a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts and historical context. The core modules on the programme serve musicians, software developers, educators, scientists, or artists who are interested in the integration of electronic hardware and software technologies and music. The programme is led by an academic team with a strong presence in the international computer music, sonic arts, and electronic music research communities. The programme engages with current thinking and practice in areas such as interactivity, electronic music performance practice, audiovisual applications, machine learning, sound spatialisation, algorithmic and spectral composition, signal processing, electronic music history, applied music technology, and sound synthesis. Students will be encouraged by the programme to place each area of study within an aesthetic, cultural and historical context, so that the theory and practice of electronic and computer music may be more comprehensively understood.
The programme has been designed to reflect the multi-dimensional character of the discipline, the increasing integration between software and hardware, and the growing academic interest in historical and aesthetic context within related fields of research.
