Programme specification:
The programme will create a distinctive research-based environment for students that integrates an advanced theoretical agenda with a strong practical orientation. The programme will be delivered in a modern, flexible and student-centred manner, allowing the students more input into the construction of their programme of study and a greater degree of engagement with the scholarly community of research active academics. This approach will play to the existing multidisciplinary strengths of POLIS and will reflect and advance the new and distinctive research environment that the School is seeking to develop.
The programme will realise a new approach to the study of political theory. By emphasising the practical applications of political thought, it will foster the ability to use theory to generate impact-oriented solutions to pressing political problems. Not only will this approach provide students with a broader range of transferable skills; it will also prepare them more effectively for an academic climate in which considerations of impact beyond academia have become critical.
By utilising a range of teaching innovations such as flexible and responsive taught modules alongside student-led discussion groups and research initiatives (such as peer-assisted learning and conference organisation), the MA programme will provide a distinctive educational level that will initiate students into the community of research-active scholars and facilitate the development of mastery of the subject. It will thereby also prepare students more effectively for independent doctoral research should they elect to pursue this.
Progression rules for all POLIS MA programmes
1) Proceed to dissertation:
Students can proceed straight to dissertation if a pass at 50% or above is achieved in a minimum of 90 credits (including all compulsory modules for that programme) AND if they have an overall credit weighted average of at least 50%. If there are any failed modules then one re-sit opportunity per failed module will be offered.
2) Proceed to dissertation suspended until 1) achieved:
Students who achieve 50% or above in a minimum of 60 but fewer than 90 credits will be suspended from progressing to dissertation until after their re-sits have been taken and the criteria in 1) have been achieved. Once the student has achieved the criteria in 1) they will be allowed to progress to project at the next available opportunity which is usually in the next academic year.
3) Cannot proceed to dissertation or MA, re-registered on PG Diploma:
Students will not be allowed to proceed to dissertation or the MA, and will subsequently be re-registered on the PGDip if a pass at 50% or above is achieved in fewer than 60 credits. There will be one re-sit opportunity offered for each failed module for a maximum award of a PGDiploma to be obtained.
