Programme specification:

The programme aims to contribute to the intellectual and professional development of all those who are using or who intend to use information and communications technology (ICT) to facilitate teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). The programme will enable students to develop a thorough understanding of the theoretical background of both TESOL and ICT. Students will also gain practical experience of using ICT to develop TESOL materials or deliver teaching. Furthermore, students will gain practical experience of e-learning and of the facilitation of online discussion.

Students will be encouraged to base their learning on their professional practice and will reflect on the relationship between their professional work and the issues and concepts raised on the programme.

Students will also conduct a small-scale research project in the area of TESOL and ICT which will provide further opportunities for the application of theory to their professional practice.

At the end of the programme students should have developed a thorough understanding of the theories of learning and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and of how to use information and communications technology (ICT) to facilitate that learning and teaching. Students should have gained knowledge of ICT applications suitable for TESOL and practical skills in the use of ICT to create TESOL materials and to support teaching. Students should have developed confidence in their use of ICT for TESOL and will be able to support colleagues in their understanding and use of ICT.
