Aims
- To provide in-depth education in the key underpinning topics of electronic and electrical engineering such as electronic circuit theory, electromagnetism, electronic materials, computing, communications and embedded systems.
- To offer specialisation in topics in electrical engineering, such as electrical power systems, electric drives, electronic control systems, and renewable energy systems.
- To provide a research-led curriculum and learning approaches in all topics, in particular in electrical power systems, electric drives, electronic control systems, and renewable energy systems.
- To demonstrate the application of electrical engineering in industry; especially in the power generation, power distribution, electronic vehicle, and industrial control sectors.
- To develop students' generic and transferable skills in written/verbal communication, management, leadership and business for careers in engineering or other professions.
- To provide extensive practical experience of electronic and electrical engineering through laboratory work and the completion of an extensive independent project in every year of study.
- To meet the full educational requirements (in the case of the MEng programme), in compliance with UK-SPEC, to permit progression to Chartered Membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and registration with ECUK as a Chartered Engineer.
- To meet the educational requirements expected of a 3 year Engineering programme (in the case of the BEng programme), in compliance with UK-SPEC, to contribute to progression to Chartered Membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and registration with ECUK as a Chartered Engineer.
Objectives
On completion of the 3 year BEng programme, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the underlying science and mathematics of electronic and electrical engineering.
- Apply mathematical and computer models to electronic and electrical engineering problems.
- Apply a knowledge and understanding of electronics, power systems and electric drives to engineering projects.
- Apply a systems approach to electronic and electrical engineering problems;
- Show competence in the use of modern software and hardware tools, materials, components and equipment for the design, construction and test of electronic circuits, control systems drives and electricity generation systems.
- Demonstrate a range of design skills including the ability to identify design constraints and to appreciate user needs.
- Demonstrate creativity in the design of electronic or electrical engineering systems.
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the commercial, economic and societal aspects of electronic and electrical engineering and understand the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering.
- Show an awareness of the legal frameworks governing electronic and electrical engineering, including governmental legislation, intellectual property and contractual issues.
- Show awareness of the environmental and sustainability, health and safety and risk assessment issues associated with electronic and electrical engineering.
- Understand appropriate codes of practice and industry standards - including quality standards - and be able to deal with technical uncertainty.
- Use a wide range of technical literature and other information sources.
- Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication
On completion of the 4 year MEng programme, graduates will have achieved all of the above and, additionally, will have further developed their skills and abilities in the following areas:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of electronic and electrical engineering, including an awareness of historical, current, and future developments and technologies.
- Apply an extensive range of mathematical and computer models to electronic and electrical engineering problems an d show an appreciation of their limitations.
- Apply a knowledge and understanding of electronics, power systems and electric drives to group and individual engineering projects.
- Use fundamental knowledge to investigate new and emerging technologies in electronic and electrical engineering.
- Apply theoretical concepts and simulation tools to unfamiliar problems in electronic & electrical engineering.
- Show knowledge and comprehensive understanding of design processes and methodologies and the ability to develop an innovative design for an electronic or electrical engineering system.
- Demonstrate an in-depth appreciation of practices and priorities in the electronic and electrical engineering industry.
- Apply research methodologies to electronic or electrical engineering project work.
- Analyse and synthesize information from electronic and electrical engineering research literature
- Demonstrate an appreciation of current developments in research in electronic and electrical engineering and their potential impact on industry and society.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
