Entry requirements:

A bachelor degree with 2:1 (hons) in a relevant subject. Suitable equivalent qualifications would be considered for overseas students or mid-career students, especially for those with relevant experience.
IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component or other English language equivalent qualifications.

Programme specification:

At the end of the programme students should have:
- gained specialist training in plant science;
- received a solid training and personal development experience in genetic and transferable skills and attitudes;
- an integrated and critical understanding of research principles and methodologies in the biosciences and in particular plant science;
- developed critical skills, both qualitative and quantitative, in the interpretation of data;
- received training in a range of practical molecular and cellular laboratory skills that are of broad relevance to research in the biosciences and in particular plant science;
- put these practical, data analysis and writing skills into practice through undertaking a supervised research project in the plant sciences.

Our MSc Plant Science and Biotechnology degree provides training in modern molecular aspects of plant science and is suitable either for those who have done a more organism-based plant biology undergraduate degree or those from a non-plant biosciences background who wish to acquire knowledge and expertise in this area. Teaching is delivered by research active academics from the University of Leeds' Centre for Plant Sciences and is often aligned with their areas of expertise.

Topics covered include, plant cell biology, plant development, plant biotechnology, bioimaging methods and applications of bioinformatics to plant science

The programme consists of 55 credits of compulsory core research training modules designed to equip students with the expertise necessary to work at the cutting edge of a modern plant science) sector - including research planning exercises, methodologies underpinning modern bioscience and an extended practical project intended to give the students experience with the techniques used in molecular biology. Added to this is an independent laboratory-based research project (85 credits) in an area of plant science and specialist plant science taught modules (40 credits).

Candidates will be required to study 180 credits.

Compulsory modules:

All modules are compulsory. However, students may be directed to take an alternative 15 credit module, approved by the Programme Leader, instead of BIOL5373M Protein Engineering Laboratory Project where appropriate and where material has been covered within undergraduate programmes (mainly in Molecular & Cellular Biology).

To obtain the award of MSc, students must achieve a pass mark in 30 credits of the 40 credits of subject specialism modules (which include BIOL5112M Bioimaging, BIOL5152M Topics in Plant Science, BIOL5251M Plant Biotechnology, and BIOL5274M High-throughput Technologies) and satisfy the Rules for Award for a Taught Postgraduate Masters programme. Otherwise an appropriate Fall back award would be available.
