Programme specification:
This programme examines the ways in which individuals and organisations can address societal and environmental problems by developing thorough understanding of business organisations, developing new businesses and creating innovation. It seeks to prepare the next generation of sustainable business leaders and social entrepreneurs who will develop, reinvent and innovate sustainable enterprises in an increasingly challenging world.
Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the course combines a conceptual review of the relationships between business, environment and society, with an applied examination of the wide range of innovative and enterprising activities that relate to simultaneous environmental, social and economic value creation.
Perspectives from business, policy and wider stakeholder groups are examined, drawing on the expertise of the School of Earth and Environment, as well as the Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Studies, Leeds University Business School, the broader University, and the practitioner community.
The course introduces students to the range of management, sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation tools that are available and shows how they are applied in practical situations. It examines the factors that shape the success or failure of these initiatives - both from a business as well as a societal perspective.
At the end of the programme students should have:
- a well-grounded and critical understanding of the factors that shape the relationships between business, environment and society
- a good knowledge of the range of policy frameworks and management initiatives that seek to promote innovation and new business development towards fostering a sustainable society
- a critical awareness of the ways in which interactions between government, business and stakeholder groups can motivate and define the influence of related frameworks and initiatives
- an ability to use the key inter-disciplinary research methods and approaches that relate to business sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation
- experience of working in interdisciplinary teams on challenges relating to social, environmental and economic value creation.
The programme comprises seven core modules (six taught and one research dissertation) and two optional modules to be selected by the students out of a choice of seven options which complement the programme objectives and learning outcomes. The optional modules support clear alternative career paths for the students to advance their interests and knowledge in one of the following areas: policy, research, corporate entrepreneurship, development and climate change.
In order to progress to project upon completion of their taught modules in Semester 2, students must have a pass at 50% or above in a minimum of 90 credits and an overall credit weighted average of at least 50%. Students that do not meet these criteria will be suspended from progressing to project until after re-sits have been taken – these are normally taken in August. If after their re-sits the student has passed sufficient credits to allow them to potentially achieve an MSc, they will be allowed to progress to project at the next available opportunity - this is usually in the next academic year.
If a student has not achieved the minimum number of credits to progress to project after their re-sits, or they do not wish to continue to their project, they will be awarded either a Postgraduate Diploma or a Postgraduate Certificate dependent on the award criteria for their programme.
To obtain the Masters' (MSc) qualification candidates must pass 165 credits of level 5 modules to include the dissertation, and achieve an average mark of 50 across 180 credits.
A Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) can be obtained if 90 credits are passed. A Postgraduate Certificate (PGC) can be obtained if 60 credits are passed.
