Programme specification:

Enable students to develop an independent academic and curatorial practice at the intersection of histories, philosophies and social studies of science, science communication and museum studies.
Underpinning the programme is an exploration of the political and ethical dimensions of interpretation and representation. Students will both explore how to understand and engage people with urgent issues facing the world, issues which are often epistemically disputed, from climate change to cancer.
In a core strand of the programme, students will take a questioning orientation to the nature of 'expertise' and 'knowledge' through tracing the histories of the disciplinary distinctions drawn between arts and science. Students will engage with key philosophical interventions that have destabilised these distinctions as well as innovative and cutting-edge art-science practices that are reimagining ways of knowing and being in 21st Century. Alongside this, students will be encouraged to develop innovative practices of dialogic and participative engagement, developing their own ways of convening and shaping citizen and public spaces for debate and for constructing new knowledges and understandings.
Students will undertake a wide range of active learning activities from developing and delivering displays, programmes and events to developing digital content and designing their own research projects. Students will be supported throughout by an interdisciplinary academic staff team drawn from fine art, museum and curatorial studies and the histories, philosophies and social studies of science as well as professionals from our partner institutions.
Students will have the option of undertaking a negotiated placement with a museum or heritage organisation and will consequently have the opportunity to put into practice, and reflect more deeply on, the theoretical underpinnings of both the history of science, technology and medicine and museum studies.
