Programme specification:
This Single Honours programme equips students with the analytical skills and theoretical background necessary for an in-depth understanding of how human language works. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of unfamiliar data from a range of languages, the application of scientific methods to the study of language, and critical thinking.
This programme aims to:
1. give students an understanding of the nature and structure of language, and its use by individuals and in society
2. introduce students to a range of approaches to the study of language, in order that the students may evaluate these approaches for themselves
3. familiarize students with the concepts of theory, theory testing and argumentation
4. give students experience of working with language data, and introduce common methods of linguistic analysis
5. give students the opportunity to study modules from across the discipline, and to engage with scholarship at the forefront of research
6. give students the opportunity to plan, carry out and write up an independent research project within a supportive environment
7. give students the opportunity to develop as independent learners and effective communicators
Students will have the opportunity to apply for participation in one of our Erasmus schemes or for spending a period of study at one of the partner institutions with which the University of Leeds has established links (International programme variant). Students will also have the opportunity to undertake a work placement as part of their degree (Industrial programme variant).
